"In another 6 months, a judge is sentencing you to 25 years to life in prison, even though this incident was the first time you had ever been in trouble with the law." |
Imagine you're a kid growing up in an inner city in America. You attend a school that can't afford to hire enough teachers for the large number of students, so the student to teacher ratio is ineffective. You leave school and go directly home because your city can't afford to fund any type of extracurricular activities and your mom doesn't want you at the park because those kids are “up to no good.” This is your life from the very beginning of elementary school until the end of middle school.
Let's fast forward four years to the end of high school. You were always intelligent and good student, but somehow you were sucked into the bad crowd in your school. Nobody can really blame you though; the school has a graduation rate of 25%, classroom sizes still averaging about 40 students for one teacher, and the city still hasn't found a way to fund activities. So, your “friends” convince you to dropout just like they did and start drug dealing to make some quick cash. You think it's great: no more homework or teachers to deal with, your wallet's getting larger, and the work is easy. Until one day, a routine deal with a customer goes badly. You didn't know this, but that guy you sold drugs to happened to be an undercover cop and as quickly as you can blink, you're in handcuffs. In another 6 months and a judge is sentencing you to 25 years to life in prison, even though this incident was the first time you had ever been in trouble with the law. This is what Mandatory Minimums truly look like. As a country, it's time for mandatory minimum sentencing to be eradicated because of the financial and societal costs that have been incurred since the beginning of the War on Drugs.
